"Roomies 2: Country Living" - written by Freedom Fighter Usually, when there's something extra to this series, it's exclusive only to the mailing list. This week, things are a little different thanks to the magnitude of this extra. This so-called *EXTRA* features an early reunion for the entire Roomies 2 cast, as they are called together to stop a bunch of terrorists. The 'terrorists' aren't a cell of al-Qaeda, trust me on that. They're actually the cast of the hit reality series fanfic Anime Survivor 4. Or at least, what's left of them at the time of this challenge. This will serve as a prologue to Episode 8 of AS4, which will go up later today/tonight. To see who they are, read up on the AS4 saga to-date. The address is: http://www.fanfiction.net/ If you're ready... here's the prologue to the crossover. CLASSIFIED INFORMATION! ====== Episode AS4-7.5 - Reunion at Pararakerus (08.27.02) Day Twenty-One A gaggle of famous anime characters have been gathered at Tokyo International Airport. Actually, let's make a correction. It's not a gaggle... just a handful of them. As for why they were there, that's another story that will be explained in due time. Bit, Mondo, and Roger are sitting down in one the airport terminals. Each of them have a small bag of their things with them for a trip. As they wait peacefully, Melfina appears. Melfina: (waving at them) Hello there! Bit: Finally, one of the girls shows up. Roger: About time. Mondo: (getting up) It's great to see you again, Mel! Melfina: You too, Mondo! She walks up and gives each of them a hug, starting with Mondo, follwed by Bit, and then Roger. She then sits down with them as the boys resume a conversation that they were in the middle of before she had shown up. Roger: So, we just began taping a few weeks ago. Bit: Lucky devil, getting your series renewed only 'cause it was popular in the states. Mondo: It must feel good to work again. After my show finished taping our last episode months ago, it's been boring around my place. Bit: You'll end up like me and start searching the net for fanfics to rip ideas off of. You never know... you might find a good storyline to propose to your production company. Mondo: No such luck for me. Mine got bought out by Disney... and they decided not to pick our series up for repeats. Bit: If it makes you feel any better, mine's not on anymore either. Roger: You guys sure it's okay to talk about your bosses on TV? Bit: What are they going to do? Fire us? Melfina: I agree with Roger. Bit: You do? Melfina: (nods) You never know. They are the ones that make suggestions to the reality fanfic writers. You could be writing away another shot at winning. Bit: Like you should talk, golden girl. Mondo: (covering Bit's mouth) Shhhh! We're not supposed to talk about that! All of a sudden, a turtle flies... yes, FLIES... towards the quartet. The turtle is carrying an envelope in her mouth. She flies by and lets go of the envelope, which gets stuck in Mondo's hair. The turtle then leaves just as quickly as she had entered. Bit: Gee, I didn't know turtles could fly. Roger: Me neither. Strange. Melfina: I'm guess that our instructions are in there? Mondo reaches up and pulls the envelope out of his hair. Quickly ripping off one side, he shakes the envelope until a letter pops out. Mondo opens the letter, with the others looking on, and folded in the letter are four airplane tickets. Bit: Well, it's safe to say we're flying somewhere. Melfina: All Nippon Airways? Mondo hands Melfina the tickets as he reads the instructions on the letter aloud. To the cast of Roomies, You have been asked to help Anime Survivor Incorporated in stopping a group of terrorists that are threatening to destroy a major world city. The missile is scheduled to launch in less than 36 hours. Your job is to fly to Pararakerus, where you will meet up with the rest of your operatives. There, you will be debriefed with further instructions on how to quell this threat. The whole world is in danger. Please help us! You're our only hope! Bit: We're going where? Mondo: (prouncing slowly) Pararakerus. (normally) Wherever that place is. Anyway, it's signed by the Anime Surivor, Inc. president, Donnie Marco. Roger: Never heard of the guy. Bit: But why would they hire us? We're all just regular joes like anyone else. Don't they have an anti-terrorism squad or something? Melfina: (points at the bottom of the letter) There's something else at the bottom. Mondo tries to read, but the print's a bit smaller than the rest of the letter. Mondo: P.S. We're offering a cash reward if you're able to stop the terrorists. Bit: Well, as Brad would probably say... (in Brad's voice) If there's money involved, then I say let's go for it. Roger: I agree. Maybe this is all a misunderstanding and I can use my skills to negotiate with these guys. Melfina: Um, guys... I was actually talking about the smaller line below that one. Mondo looks back at the letter, with Bit, Roger, and Melfina looking over his shoulder. The print here is even smaller and barely visible to the naked eye. Mondo manages to make it out, though. Mondo: P.P.S. This letter will self-destruct in five seconds. All four of them scream in fright as Mondo quickly crumples up the paper and throws it at the nearest trash can. The four of them then drop to the ground and take cover. But just as the crumpled ball reaches the can, it explodes... into confetti. Bit: (looking up) What kind of explosion was that? Roger gets up and dusts himself off. He then extends an arm to Melfina, who gladly accepts it. Roger: (as he pulls Melfina up) Just be lucky we're all still alive. Mondo: (getting up) That was amazing! He runs over to where the crumpled piece of paper had exploded into confetti, which had made a nice little pile right around the trash can. Mondo: (picking a piece up) How did it do that? Roger: Probably some cheap magic, that's all. Melfina glances at the airplane tickets, still in her hand, and examines them. Melfina: Um, guys... the ticket says that our plane leaves in... She glances at the clock as she finishes her sentence. Melfina: ...13 minutes. Bit: What? You mean we're going to miss our flight? Mondo runs back over to the group and picks up his bag. Mondo: Not if I can help! He snatches one of the tickets from Melfina, then takes off. Melfina: Mondo, wait! Roger reaches over and plucks a ticket from Melfina's hand. Roger: It says Gate 12. Bit: Hey... I think I saw that gate on my way in. (points to his right) That way. Roger: (points straight ahead) Then why is Mondo going that way? Mondo: (shouting loudly) Out of my way! I'm trying to catch a flight here! Bit, Roger, and Melfina all groan loudly. Roger: I'd better go get him. You two go ahead and get on the plane. Before Bit and Melfina could object, Roger grabs his bag and takes off after the now-almost out-of-sight Mondo. ====== Day Twenty-Two Wondering where the other Roomies are? Well, it's time to answer that question. Currently driving through the streets of Pararakerus is a minibus, which holds the other eight Roomies cast members. But unlike the others coming from Tokyo, none of the members of this group know what's going on. In fact, they believe that they're going to a press party... Joey: I don't know about this. Kiyone: I agree. Something's fishy. Jeri: But why would Mr. Fighter do that? He's not the type of person to lie. Jessie: He's just like the other authors in the resort. They're all manipulative. I bet this is probably just some excuse to get us out of the hotel so he can whip up a surprise for us. Chi-Chi: But would he do that? It's not anyone's birthday, is it? Everyone on the bus shakes their heads, giving off a solid 'no.' Duo: (laying back) Just relax. We'll find out what's going on when we get there. I mean, there's no way he'd deliberately kick us out of the hotel. Faye: What makes you say that? For all we know, he might be! Duo: 'Cause he's the type of guy who wouldn't. ====== Minutes later, the minibus pulls into the airport's main road, heading towards the place where people are dropped off to catch their flights. Jessie: I knew it! He did kick us out! Joey: You mean we're actually getting sent back home? Duo: This can't be what it seems. Jessie: How much more proof do you need? We're at the airport! Everyone on the bus then begins to believe that they did, indeed, get kicked out of the hotel. They all started to panic. Jessie: All of my belongings are still back at the resort! Kiyone: My Galaxy Police uniform! Jeri: My puppet! Joey: My Duel Monsters deck! Chi-Chi: My cooking supplies! Faye: My make-up kit! Duo: My braiding set! Everyone turns and stares at Duo. Duo: I'm serious! You think this ponytail of mine holds in place 24-7? Kiyone: Point taken. (turning towards the back) What do you think, Keitaro? The entire group looks to the back, where Keitaro is daydreaming as he stares out the window. Keitaro: (thinking to himself) Why can't I get a break? First Roomies, and now Anime Survivor. Is it that people don't like me? I try my best to help out and instead it blows up in my face! Chi-Chi: Keitaro? Keitaro: (thinking) First, I have my troubles with Jessie and Kiyone in Okayama, and then Akane, Rika, and Meilin here in Pararakerus. Why can't I meet a girl who doesn't think I'm perverted? Faye: Hey, Keitaro! Keitaro: (thinking) It's not like I try to be perverted. Why can't they see that deep inside I'm a nice guy? I guess I'll never understand woman. What am I saying? I have to if I'm going to get into Tokyo University and keep that promise with that girl from 15 years ago. Jessie: Keitaro, you peabrain! Wake up! Jessie, now standing in the aisle next to Keitaro's seat, pulls on Keitaro's arm and makes him fall to the ground. Jessie: You're over here and daydreaming while we're about to get shipped off of the island! Keitaro tries to pick himself up. He reaches out to grab something to support himself... but he ends up grabbing Jessie's right leg, at the kneecap. Jessie: You little... A split second later, Keitaro is flying towards the front of the bus. Everyone jumps or ducks out of the way to avoid the flying pervert as he smashes into the front windshield... but amazingly, not through it. Bus Driver: Will you guys keep it down? (to Keitaro) And you, get off the windshield! I just had it washed! Keitaro slowly slides down until he falls back and hits the ground. Duo grabs Keitaro by the arms and drags him into one of the seats. Duo: Man, I'll never understand your problem with women. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Meanwhile, the All Nippon Airways plane from Tokyo lands at the airport. Bit, Roger, Mondo, and Melfina are among the last to disembark from the jet. Heading into the terminal, they arrive at customs, where they are checked out. But things are about to become a little unroutine. A customs officer appears and blocks their path. Roger tries to negotiate with him. Roger: Whatever we did, I'm sure we can negotiate some type of deal. The officer responds only by pointing them back into the tunnel leading back to the plane. Bit: We just got off that plane. Why are we going back? The officer pushes Bit into the tunnel. Reluctantly, Roger, Melfina, and Mondo obey the officer's orders and walk back down to the tarmac. Bit: Why are we going along with this? Melfina: Because we have no idea what this guy wants. Roger: Maybe this guy can take us to this guy that's supposed to debrief us. Melfina: You think so? Roger: It's gotta be. Upon arriving on the tarmac, a minibus pulls up and stops in front of them. Mondo: I guess we've gotta get on. Bit: I get it now! This officer just made sure that we left at the right place. Right? The officer stands there, silent. Mondo: Do you even have a voice or what? No response. Roger: Guess not. ====== Meanwhile, on the minibus, everyone is looking out the right side of the bus at an airplane (Bit and the others are standing by the left side). Joey: I guess that's the plane that's taking us back home. Jeri: But I wanted to stay and see if Rika was going to win. Kiyone: It looks like we have no say in the matter. We're going home. Suddenly, the doors of the bus swing open, beckoning for the eight of them to step off to board the plane. But before anyone could move towards the door, somebody comes onto the bus. Melfina: (to the driver) This bus will take us to where we need to go, right? Duo: Melfina? Melfina turns and sees Duo sitting down, two rows behind the driver. Melfina: Duo? Duo hops out of his seat and reaches out to hug Melfina. She gladly extends her arms and accepts the friendly gesture. Joey: Are we glad to see you, Mel! We all thought we were kicked out of the resort. Melfina: What resort? Duo: We'll explain later. Duo and Melfina then let go to each other to find an empty seat for the two of them. But as they do, Bit, Mondo, and Roger board the bus, to the surprise of the others. Joey: Hey Bit! Bit: Joey? Long time no see! Bit and Joey high five each other before sharing a hearty handshake. Bit and Joey: The bestest roommates in the mansion are back together! Upon Mondo's entrance, Jeri runs right at him and latches her arms onto his. Jeri: Mondo! Mondo: Jeri! Boy, it's nice to see you in person again! Jeri: I know... talking on the phone isn't as fun as talking to you face-to-face. Mondo: Yeah! I don't have Rockna breathing down my back, for one thing. At least we can resume our relationship again. Mondo and Jeri think for a minute, and then shake their heads. Mondo and Jeri: Naaaa. Let's just stay friends. As the young duo bubbled with excitement, Roger glances around, hoping to get the same treatment as Melfina, Bit, and Mondo had... but no dice. Roger: Hey! Don't I get a high-five, a hug, or a kiss? Faye: Why? None of us missed you. Roger: (raising an eyebrow) Not even you? Faye: (smiles) Okay, maybe a little bit. Roger: Really? Faye: I'm still not going out with you, so don't press your luck. ====== As the minibus starts moving again towards the south end of the airport, the group comes to a startling realization. Joey: So, if we're not getting kicked out of the resort or going to a press party, then what are we doing? Melfina: We've been hired by AS Inc. to stop a group of terrorists from blowing up a major world city. Chi-Chi: AS Inc.? That's the company that runs the resort! Duo: Terrorists? Any idea what their demands are? Kiyone: They're going to blow up a major city? We've got to stop them! Roger: We don't know that much. What we do know is that we're supposed to meet with somebody to be fully debriefed on the mission. Jessie: Why are we doing this anyway? If these guys are evil, then let them do what they want! Bit: But what if they're trying to blow up your city? Jessie: Like it would matter to me! The only home I have is with Team Rocket. Kiyone: It figures... bad guys do have more financial problems than good guys do. Chi-Chi: Okay, with Jessie's intention to let them do what they want anyway put aside, what do we have to lose going up against these terrorists? Jeri: Our families. Mondo: Our significant others. Bit: Our friends. Keitaro: (gulps) Our lives. Then, there's a brief moment of silence on the minibus before its passengers are panicking chaotically once again. Jeri: What are we going to do? Joey: Hide and hope someone else can stop them! Keitaro: I second that! Faye: Hey, hold on a minute! Why should we be so scared? We can probably handle a few measly terrorists. Faye glances at Chi-Chi, Roger, Kiyone, Duo, and Melfina. Faye: At least half of us has had some experience fighting terrorists. With our combined expertise, this should be a piece of cake! Duo: Faye's right... for once. Faye: Hey! Chi-Chi: I agree! We can take whatever they can dish out! Kiyone: It might actually be a whole lot of fun! Melfina: And I'm sure whomever's funding our mission will prepare us well. Roger: So what do you say? Are you guys in? Mondo: I'm in! If you guys are confident that we can do it, then I'm all for it! Jeri: Well, if Mondo's in, then I guess I am too... even though I'm still scared about the whole thing. Joey: I'd probably be perceived as a chicken if I didn't do it and Mondo and Jeri did. So, I'm in. Bit: Me too... roomie! Everyone glances at Keitaro and Jessie, the only two yet to agree on it. Keitaro: You'd drag me into even if I did say no... so I guess have to too. Jessie: (crossing her arms over her chest) I'm not doing it! Roger: There might be a reward involved. Jessie: (changing her mind) Uh... on second thought, I'm in! Faye: Then it's agreed. We're off to kick some terrorist butt! ====== Arriving at a hangar at the south end of the airport, the Roomies file out one by one. Right outside the hangar, they are greeted by Anderson Cooper. Anderson: Greetings, Roomies! Welcome to Pararakerus. Well... at least those of you who weren't at the resort. Roger: And you are? Anderson: Anderson Cooper. The whole group draws a blank, not knowing who he is. Anderson: The host of 'The Mole.' You know, the reality series? Joey: I've heard of that show! It's the one where you have one of the contestants work against the others in a competition for money, right? Anderson: More or less, yes. Joey: So if you're here, that means one of us is the mole and is helping out the terrorists, right? Joey immediately turns towards Jessie and points her out. Joey: You didn't want to do this mission! You MUST be the mole! Jessie: Preposterous! I learned about it the same way you did, twerp! Melfina: (to Anderson) That's not it, is it? Anderson: Nope. In fact, if you follow me, I'll fill you in on all the details. Anderson walks towards a door leading into the hangar. The gang follows him in, with Jessie and Joey shooting daggers at each other. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Inside the hangar, two rows of folding chairs are set up. Standing in front of the chairs is a chalkboard on wheels, complete with chalk and erasers. The gang takes their seats as Anderson goes to the front to explain the mission to them. Anderson: First things first... let me make clear that these are not real terrorists. They're just a small group of professionals that we hired for this game. So, no need to worry. Jeri: Thank goodness. Jessie: They're not? That takes all of the fun out of it! Keitaro: You call it fun? I call it walking into a grave! Anderson: And to reassure you even more, the weapons that they will be using are just ordinary paintball guns. Just the same as you're going to use. Bit: Paintball? What the heck is paintball? Kiyone: It's very painful, trust me. Bit: What? You've played it before? Kiyone: No. But watching it on TV feels so real... you should hear the impact the balls make. Anderson: Kiyone's right. Allow me to demonstrate. Anderson walks off to the side and pulls out a paintball gun. He then aims at the chalkboard and fires. The flying projectile hits the board with an instant 'thwack' sound, making the board teeter back slightly. Joey: That didn't sound too promising... we're gonna be hit by these things? Anderson: Yes. Jessie: What do I look like? A human target? Real or not, I'm not subjecting myself to cruel and unusual punishment! I'm out of here! Kiyone: It only hurts if you get hit. Faye: My kind of game... I'll waltz through, paintball-free. Bit: Come on Jessie. You're not scared, are you? Jessie: Me? Of course not! I just don't want to get hurt, that's all. Anderson: (walking up to Jessie) Would you change your mind if I told you that you're competing for a reward? Jessie: (raising an eyebrow) How much? Anderson walks off-screen, then returns with a suitcase. The others gather around him as he opens it... and reveals $250,000. Anderson: $250,000, to be split evenly among the 12 of you. Melfina: (quickly calculating) That's almost $21,000 apiece. Jessie: $250,000! Think of all of the expensive clothing and food I could buy! Duo: Melfina said we're getting just under $21,000... but still, that's a pretty good chunk of change we're talking about. Jessie: Okay, I'm in! Anderson: Is that the consensus of the whole group? The rest of the Roomies sound off with a loud 'Yes,' almost enough to knock Anderson off of his feet. Anderson: In that case, allow me to get more into detail... ====== As Anderson explains the details, scenes of the Roomies hard at work preparing are shown on the screen. Anderson: (VO) Somewhere on this island stands a nuclear warhead. A fake one, mind you, but it looks authentic otherwise. Your first task is to find it. Chi-Chi, Joey, and Kiyone are looking at a black-and-white terrain map of the island. Chi-Chi: I think it's a given that they'll all be hiding in the forests. Kiyone: The missile would probably be somewhere close to the center. Joey: So, I guess we should concentrate our search there then, huh? Kiyone: It would be the best strategy. Anderson: (VO) The terrorists have the missile aimed at a major world city. Your second task will be to determine their target city. Jeri is sitting in a chair with a giant atlas in her lap, opened up to a map of the world. Duo is kneeling next to her, to the left, with a green marker in hand, as he marks off five major cities. Jessie is standing right behind Jeri, looking over her head. Anderson: (VO) The six prospective targets... New York, Paris, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Duo: The dogs! How dare they have Tokyo as one of their targets! Jeri: They can't hit Tokyo! My family lives there! Jessie: Duh. Jeri: But which target could it be? Duo: How are we going to figure that out, anyway? Anderson: (VO) To find clues as to where the missile is heading, you'll have to shoot the terrorists down using your paintball guns. Each of them holds a clue that they must give up to you upon being captured. Bit, Faye, and Roger are testing out the guns in a makeshift practice range inside the hangar. Bit: These things pack quite a punch! Faye: More recoil than I would like... but otherwise, I feel right at home. Roger: There's no way those terrorists will avoid our sharpshooting abilities. Anderson: (VO) Of course, just reaching the missile doesn't complete the mission. For the final task, you need to disarm it. And some of the clues that you'll get will clue you in on what that password is. Keitaro, Melfina, and Mondo are busy putting a strategy together. Melfina: So an even six-six split should work. The first half charges in aggressively, taking out as many as they can. Mondo: That'll open the door for the second team, which can waltz in and pick off anybody that's left on our way to the missile. Keitaro: I have to admit, the plan's ingenious. Melfina: Why thank you, Keitaro. Keitaro: It's nothing. Really. ====== It's now eleven thirty. The twelve Roomies are armed with paintball guns and are discussing their strategy together as a team. But Anderson's about to throw them one more kink in their plan... Anderson: Half an hour from now, your mission will begin. You'll have 12 hours to find and disarm the missile... from noon to midnight. Chi-Chi: Will there be some sort of signal to start the game? Anderson: Yes, an artillery cannon will be fired at high noon. Once you here it, the game has begun. Faye: (whines) Do we have to wait 'til then? I'm ready to go out and shoot a couple of terrorists down! Duo: Patience, Faye... we'll wipe them out, no sweat! Anderson: Before the mission begins though, I've got one more thing to take care of. Mondo: What's that? Anderson: Since you are unfamiliar with the territory, we need one of you to act as a guide. You'll be on top of a lookout tower, with a gadget that tells the exact location of the missile. Any volunteers? Faye: I nominate Keitaro! Keitaro: What? Chi-Chi: Second! Duo: And third! Keitaro: But why? Kiyone: No offense Keitaro, but we need someone who would help us out better by being a tracker instead of a shooter. Keitaro: Then pick Jeri! Bit: She can handle herself real well... she proved that way back when, remember? Keitaro: But that was a video game! Jessie: But at least she doesn't go around, trying to cop a feel off of somebody! Anderson: Then Keitaro it is. A jeep pulls out in front of the hangar. Keitaro and Anderson hop in, heading off to the watch tower. ====== Fifteen minutes later, the jeep has arrived at the lookout tower. Keitaro and Anderson climb to the top, where a small radar and a map await them. Anderson: This is the lookout tower. From here, you'll be able to track the missile to its exact location. Anderson turns the radar on, revealing a virtual map of the island. Anderson: At exactly twelve o'clock, the tracking signal will begin emitting a weak yet detectable beep, which you'll notice on this screen. Your job is to guide the team to the missile. Keitaro: But how do I tell where the others are? Anderson: That's for you to figure out. Keitaro: Oh man... put all the pressure on me, why don't you? Anderson pulls out a walkie talkie and hands it to Keitaro. Anderson: You can use this to keep in touch with the team and relay them directions. Good luck. He then starts climbing down the tower, leaving Keitaro alone. Keitaro sighs and picks up the map, trying to figure out where the airport was. Keitaro: Why isn't it marked on here? (sighs) This is going to be harder than I thought. ====== Back at the hangar, the start time approaches rapidly. With the loss of Keitaro to the radio tower, they manage to reconfigure their strategy. Kiyone: So, thanks to Mondo and Melfina, here are the new assignments. Chi-Chi, Roger, Duo, Jessie, Faye, and I will make up team one. They'll charge in first, trying to clear out all of the terrorists deeper in. Bit: And I lead the second team, which will have Joey, Jeri, Mondo, and Melfina, right? Kiyone: (nods) Precisely. That team moves slowly, providing cover fire at the beginning and then trotting along, picking off anyone who the first team couldn't get rid of. Chi-Chi: Remember, we stay together as one unit until we encounter the enemy. Got it? The group collectively nods in agreement. Chi-Chi: We've got to stop them at all costs! ====== Meanwhile, things are peaceful at the lookout tower, where Keitaro is taking a little nap as he hangs over the side, with the map over his head. But the silence is broken when the sound of a large artillery cannon being fired fills the air, scaring the pants off of Keitaro... literally. Keitaro: Ack! I'm under attack! Pulling up his pants, Keitaro ducks back into the tower, shivering like a scaredy cat as the map floats down and lands on his head. At that moment, he hears a voice coming from the walkie talkie. Kiyone: Keitaro, this is Kiyone! We're moving out! You ready? Keitaro gathers himself, gets up, and answers her. Keitaro: Don't worry guys! I won't steer you wrong! Jessie: You'd better not! Faye: Yeah! ====== True to their strategy, the full team of eleven stayed together as they trekked through the marshes and sandy dunes of Pararakerus. But they seem to be getting restless, since they've been searching for three hours without seeing a terrorist or a missile. Jeri: (panting) This island's bigger than I thought. Mondo: Hang in there, Jeri! I'm with you all the way! Faye: Just where are these guys hiding anyway? The group sets up behind a set of sand dunes that are overlooking the jungle. Kiyone: Back into the jungle we go... second team, provide some cover! The second team leaps out and sprints for the forest with paintball guns in hand. Joey leads the way, with Melfina, Bit, Mondo, and Jeri not too far behind. Suddenly, pintballs are flying in the air as the team heads into battle. Bit: (shouting) You couldn't hit the broad side of a barn! Melfina: You know, you shouldn't mock the terrorists. And with that, the sound of someone getting hit fills the air. But behind the second team, the first team charges along, sneaking off toward the jungle... Well, that's all you get from me, folks!
