"Mystery Solvers" - written by Freedom Fighter Remember last month at the end of "Roomies 2: Country Living" that I said that I was done for the reality series business for the year? Well, I purposely lied to all of you to keep this little baby a secret. By now, you've undoubtedly read the trailer on my profile page. And if you haven't, it's too late now, because it's gone. But by the end of this little introduction, you should know what's going on. Anyway, everyone knows that "Roomies" was a mix of elements from a bunch of reality shows, but focused on two in particular. Those being "Road Rules" and "Real World." Here in "Mystery Solvers," expect a cross between "The Mole" and "Murder in Small Town X." Luckily, more of the former than the latter. So, straight from the author that brought you the "Roomies" reality fanfic series comes "Mystery Solvers." Enjoy! Fanfic Rating: Will be PG throughout most of the duration, but there may be a PG-13 element added later on. Pointing straight down, the camera zooms in far enough to see all of North America, and then the United States. It zooms in even closer, aiming towards the southwest part of the country, to the state of Arizona. And finally, it focuses on a small town in the northern part of the state. [Location: Gullible Gulch, Arizona, USA] The view switches to a camera now actually propped up on Earth, on top of the only cliff overlooking the town, about half of a mile south of the closest building. A bit of glare from the sun, rising from the East, is visible off to the right side. [Time: 7:44 a.m. PT] In the town itself on this warm autumn morning, the population of just over a hundred citizens, for the most part, is already up and heading off to their regular destinations. For the adults, off to their place of work. For the kids, off to the local school. Just a normal day as far as everyone is concerned. [Date: Sunday, October 20th, 2002] Sitting on the south end of Gullible Gulch is the town's only bank. The inhabitants of this old Western town relied on the bank to store their most precious valuables, their retirement pensions, and their paycheck savings. The bank opens at seven thirty every morning except on Saturdays, and this was no exception. Though on this morning, the bank was completely empty. The only two people present were the bank manager and the bank teller. Bank manager Kou Uraki [Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory] was sitting behind his brown oak desk, located just inches from the bank's vault. He had a small stack of completed forms on his desk, all from people who had made deposits after the bank closed for the day yesterday. He was going through them with a red ink ballpoint pen in hand, checking them for accuracy. In another stack on his desk lied a stack of envelopes, all filled with the money for the aforementioned deposits. As he checked each form off, he opened each envelope and made sure that the amount of money mentioned was inside. Once that was done, Kou would paper clip the form and the envelope together, putting them aside until he had a chance to go into the vault. On the other side of the room stood the two teller booths. And sitting behind one of them was the bank's only full-time teller, Naru Narusegawa [Love Hina]. Naru had come to the United States from Japan in order to become an accountant, but she didn't have the money to attend classes at Arizona State University. She had heard about the bank here in Gullible Gulch needed an intern to serve as a bank teller. But she didn't think that she'd be the only one there, having to work from opening to closing six days a week. It wasn't a total loss, though. There was a second teller that would come in during the afternoons to help when the bank was at its busiest. The bank was always closed at noon for an hour-long lunch break. And whenever Kou wasn't busy at his desk, he would take over for Naru to give her a break. And the best part of it all was that she was getting paid handsomely. On this particular day, Naru sat inside the booth, behind the teller window, reading a fashion magazine. After all, the average number of visitors they'd get per day was just over two, pay days not included. And it's not like she could be fired for slacking off. What else could she do anyway? Suddenly, the peaceful serenity of the bank is shattered. Literally. A quick glance to the large glass window to the right of the entrance and instantly Naru catches on. A masked man is standing in front of the broken window, which had been destroyed into hundreds of pieces that littered the floor. Naru: (jumping out of her seat) Hey! Don't you know how to use the door? Kou: (shouting from the back) Naru, who's there? A customer? Naru: A very rude customer. The masked man reaches into his left pants pocket and pulls out a six-shooter pistol. He immediately aims it at Naru. Masked Man: This is a hold-up, sister! Naru: I'm not your sister! Look, if you don't leave right now, I'm going to call the sheriff! Masked Man: Do you not understand? Maybe you'll understand this! He unlocks the safety and fires one shot straight in the air. Just the sound of the gun firing is enough to scare the nerves out of Naru. She quickly dives to the ground, holding her magazine over her head. Kou: (coming out from the back) What's all the racket? Masked Man: (turning the gun towards Kou) Okay, not a step further! Kou: (shooting his hands up in the air) What do you want? Masked Man: All of the money in the vault! Now! Kou: (immediately obeying) Yes, sir. Right away. Masked Man: And get 'Little Miss Stupid' over there to help. Upon hearing that, Naru comes out of her hiding place and starts yelling again. Naru: You're calling ME stupid? (rolling up her sleeves) That's it! I don't have to be pushed around by the likes of you! Masked Man: (turning the gun towards Naru) And stubborn too. Expected as much from a city girl. Naru: (laughing nervously) I guess I am stupid, huh? Well, I'd better go get the money out of the vault. Naru walks out from behind the teller's booth and heads for the vault. The robber then turns his gun back towards Kou. Masked Man: I want it all in two large money bags. And if I don't get it in five minutes, this guy here gets it! Naru: (gasps as she stops in her tracks) Mr. Uraki? Kou: Do what he says. The combination is Left 29, Right 4, then Left 32. Naru: Right away. Naru heads off to the vault to unlock it while the robber keeps an eye on Kou. ====== A few minutes later, Naru returns from the vault. She's dragging two sacks of money on the floor towards the robber and Kou. Masked Man: I'm impressed. You did that pretty quickly. For a city girl, anyway. He motions for Naru to step back as he leans forward to pick up the sacks. He slings them both over his left shoulder before slowly stepping backwards, towards the exit. Masked Man: Well, it's been fun. But I've got to go now. And with that, the robber turns and runs out of the bank, this time kicking the entrance door open. He sprints down the street, which only a few people are currently traversing. He quickly disappears from sight as Kou and Naru come running out of the bank. Kou: (shouting) Help! The bank's been robbed! Naru: (clenching her fist in anger) If he didn't have that gun, I would have given him a piece of my mind! Kou: (putting a hand on Naru's shoulder) Forget about it. Once the sheriff gets here, he'll catch that robber. ====== [Time: 7:53 a.m.] A scant four minutes after the robber had left the bank, Sheriff Buzz Lightyear [Toy Story] arrives on the scene. By his side is his deputy, Spike Spiegel [Cowboy Bebop]. A small crowd had already gathered around the bank, including the town's local newspaper reporter and photographer. That was Lois Lane [Superman] and Peter Parker [Spider-Man], respectively. Lois: (running up to Buzz) Sheriff Lightyear, what do you make of the scene? Buzz: It's a total mess. If you excuse me, I have an investigation that needs to be started. Spike: You need any help? Buzz: Just keep the crowd under control, Spiegel. No one gets within 20 feet of the crime scene. (eyeing Lois carefully) And that includes reporters too, Miss Lane. Buzz heads into the bank while Spike starts pushing the crowd back. Spike: You heard the sheriff! Everyone back! (mumbling) Reduced to crowd control. I can't believe this. ====== [Time: 8:11 a.m.] The crowd around the bank continues to grow by the minute. Buzz is inside, interrogating both Kou and Naru, while Spike is outside, keeping the crowd away from getting any closer. But things are about to become more complicated, as four new individuals approach the crowd. But for a different reason. Crowd Member # 1: Are you the sheriff, man? Spike: (uninterested) Oh, it's you. Bart. The young boy in front of him was indeed Bart Simpson [The Simpsons]. He didn't look as if he was causing pranks as he usually did every morning. Bart: Someone took my disguise kit and I want it back! Spike: Can't you see the sheriff is busy? Bart: (whistling) Cool! Who broke into the bank? Spike: For all we know, it could have been you. Bart: Me? Come on... that's too obvious! Crowd Member # 2: Deputy, I can't find my pom poms anywhere. Appearing next to Bart was Sakura Kinomoto [Cardcaptor Sakura], the town's young cheerleading superstar. Spike: Why are you telling me? Haven't you looked around your room? Sakura: Would I be here if I hadn't looked here yet? Bart: Who cares about some stupid pom poms? Sakura: (meekly) But they were my favorite pair. Crowd Member # 3: Excuse me, but do you know where I can find the sheriff? Spike: He's busy. Come back later. The third individual was a teenage catgirl named Kizuna Towryk [Pilot Candidate]. She was standing right behind the deputy. Kizuna: He stole my wig. I need that wig! I'm the stunt double. Without it, people will be able to tell that I'm not really the star actress. Bart: My disguise kit is more important than a wig. Kizuna: The wig's custom made and is very expensive to replace! Sakura: (sighs) Those were the pom poms I used at that competition last month. Crowd Member # 4: Those are all petty compared to what's been stolen from me! Spike: (raising an eyebrow) Mr. Satan? Not you too. Hercule Satan [Dragonball Z], in his wrestling outfit, is jumping up and down in a fit of rage. Hercule: Somebody stole my Olympic silver medal and I want it back! Kizuna: Hello! What about my wig? Bart: And my kit, man! Sakura: (sniffling) Those pom poms helped me win the under-13 division! Spike: The heck's going on? You people are driving me crazy! Buzz: (stepping outside) What's all the noise? I thought you were keeping the crowd under control. Spike: Yes, but... Bart: Someone stole my disguise kit! Sakura: (crying) And m-m-m-my pom p-p-poms! Kizuna: Not to mention my wig! Hercule: What about my Olympic medal? That's priceless, you know! Irreplaceable! Buzz: (putting his hands up) Okay everyone, calm down! It seems we have more than an ordinary thief on our hands here. (to Bart) Let's start with you. ====== [Time: 8:58 a.m.] After checking out the four houses from which items were stolen from, the sheriff returns to the bank. Upon arrival, he is greeted by the town's mayor, Velma Dinkley [What's New, Scooby-Doo]... as well as a crowd that now includes 95% of the town's population. Buzz: Good morning, Mayor Dinkley. Velma: Skip the plesantries, Sheriff Lightyear. Where have you been? Buzz: Investigating four crime scenes that may be linked to the bank robbery. Four citizens claim that an item of great value was stolen from their houses. Velma: Any clues? Buzz: None of substantial significance. No leads as to who may have done this either. Velma: We've got no other choice than to go into lockdown. Buzz: Lockdown? Isn't that a little extreme? Velma ignores Buzz and walks over towards Spike. She stops, turns to face the crowd, then raises her arms up into the hand to quiet them down. Velma: People of Gullible Gulch. We have a thief in our midst. The crowd starts murmuring loudly as Peter starts taking pictures for the local newspaper. Velma: I ask that all of you please return to your homes. Effective as soon as I finish my speech, the town is in lockdown. No one will be allowed in or out of Gullible Gulch until further notice. Kizuna: (stepping forward) You can't do that! They need me on the movie set! A second person steps forward, this one being Mario [Super Mario Brothers], the town's resident plumber. Mario: And I'm-a expecting a shipment of nuts and bolts-a this morning. Velma: I'm sorry, but there will be no exceptions. Sheriff Lightyear and Deputy Spiegel, you will commence an interrogation of the whole town ASAP. Spike: The whole town? That'll take at least all day! Buzz: That's an order, deputy. We'll do whatever the mayor asks us to do. Naru: (coming out of the bank) I guess I get the rest of the day off then. (waving goodbye to Kou) See you tomorrow, Mr. Uraki! Buzz: (stepping in front of her) Hold on, Miss Narusegawa. I'm not done questioning you yet. Naru: (putting her hands on her hips) What? Look, I've told you everything I know! Buzz: I want to make sure. After all, you may be hiding something. Naru: What would I have to hide? Stupid city girls have nothing to hide. They're always open for everyone to see! Naru then stomps past Buzz, heading back towards her house. The crowd also disperses towards their own places of residence. Spike: She seems peeved. Buzz: We'd better keep an eye on her. Kou: (to Velma) What about my bank? What am I supposed to do now? Velma: The bank has an insurance policy, right? It'll be taken care of. For now, I think you'd better head home. Buzz: We'll be in touch with you later today, Mr. Uraki. Kou: I understand. Kou then runs off as Buzz and Spike head back into the bank to examine the crime scene thoroughly. Velma: Keep me updated, boys. I want to know about everything you find. Buzz: (saluting) Sure thing, Mayor Dinkley. You can count on us! ====== [Time: 5:09 p.m.] After gathering clues at the bank and interrogating the populace to no end, Buzz and Spike are taking a break inside the sheriff's office. Spike: We're not any closer to solving this mystery than we were this morning! Buzz: Patience. Our big break will come to us any minute. Suddenly, the phone starts ringing. Buzz smiles and picks the receiver up. Buzz: (to Spike) See? (into the phone) Sheriff Lightyear, speaking. He sits silently as he listens to someone talk to him on the other side of the line. His eyes then bug out in disbelief. Buzz: Missing? She's missing? ====== [Time: 5:14 p.m.] On the north edge of town lies a movie set. The cast and crew of this production however were not filming. Instead, all of them were pacing around nervously. And that's how Buzz and Spike found them upon their arrival. Movie Director: It's about time you got here! The movie's director, Judy Funnie [Doug], was not very happy about what was going on. And the look in her eyes clearly showed it. Judy: First my understudy. Then the lead actress! Now, I'm missing my sunglasses and one of the film rolls is gone! This is what you call keeping the town safe from crime? I've seen better sheriffs in those old Western movies! Buzz: Calm down! Your understudy is safe, under the mayor's protection. Now, what's this about your lead actress missing? Judy takes out a picture of her lead actress. She happens to be Sally Acorn [Sonic the Hedgehog]. Buzz: (to Spike) Find the rest of the cast and crew and start asking them about everything. Spike nods, then runs off to the nearest trailer. There, he finds Ryoko [Tenchi Muyo], who plays the movie's villain. Ryoko: I'm glad she's gone. Heck, she's almost as annoying as another certain princess. Spike: So when did you learn that she was missing? Ryoko: About ten minutes ago. You know, I hope she really is missing. Then I can stop filming this movie and turn my attention to a project that shows of my natural talents. Spike: You hated her that much? Ryoko: Oh yeah. Just because she's the star, she thinks she can get her way with everything. Well, screw her! Spike then moves on, interviewing Botan [Yu-Yu Hakusho], the camerawoman, and Ken Taki [Gunsmith Cats], the special effects man. He then heads back to where Buzz had been talking to Judy to share his findings. ====== [Time: 8:00 p.m.] Back at the sheriff's station, Buzz and Velma are talking about what direction the investigation should head in. Spike had already left for the day. Velma: Shouldn't Spike be here anyway? He's as much a part of this as you and me. Buzz: He's been overworked lately. Besides, there's no way he has anything to do with the robberies. Velma: How do you know that for sure? Buzz: He's my deputy! With all due respect, I wouldn't have hired him if he showed any signs that he would become a criminal. Velma: I'm just saying that you shouldn't rule anybody out that easily. For all we know, he could be the thief. So could you. Buzz: Mayor Dinkley, I am an honest citizen of the law! Velma: True, but that doesn't rule you out. The same thing goes for me. I could be the guilty party and you'd never know. Buzz: Are you the guilty party? Velma: (laughs) Of course, not silly. But I'm trying to prove my point. There isn't enough evidence that clears anybody. Even myself. I can say that I didn't rob the bank, but would you really believe me? Buzz: No. Velma: Of course not! I'm the mayor! Buzz: So, where do we go from here? Velma: You can start by combing all of the crime scenes again tomorrow. There might have been something you missed. Buzz: As you wish. You have nothing to fear, mayor. We'll catch this serial robber... whomever he or she is. ====== [Date: Monday, October 23rd, 2002] [Time: 10:14 a.m.] The next morning, Velma is walking from the mayor's office down to the sheriff's office. She had gotten word from the sheriff that the thief might have been found. On the way, she is confronted by the town's idiot, Ed [Ed, Edd n Eddy]. Velma: Pardon me Ed, but I have somewhere I need to go. Ed doesn't budge. Instead, he starts to stare Velma right in the eyes. Velma: Ed, I don't have time to deal with you today. Go fool around with someone else. Ed: (salutes as his tongue hangs out the side of his mouth) Buttered toast. Velma: (walking past) Sorry, not interested. Ed: (scratching his head) Huh? Velma reaches for the doorknob into the sheriff's office. As she does, Ed starts shouting at her. Ed: Velma! What do you want to do today? Velma: (shouting back as she goes in) Go away, Ed! ====== Inside the sheriff's office, Spike escorts Velma to the jail cells. There, she finds Buzz waiting for her. And to Velma's surprise, both of cells had someone in them. One of the detainees was Sakura, whose left eye was black. She was sitting on the bench in her cell, favoring her left ankle. The other detainee was Bubbles Utonium [The Powerpuff Girls], who had her arms wrapped around the cell bars. And she was shaking them angrily. Bubbles: I don't deserve to be in here! (points to Sakura) She's the thief! Sakura: (trying to hold back tears) I'm telling you, I'm not the thief! Velma: What's going on here? Buzz: Deputy Spiegel and I found these two down by the watering hole outside of town. They were both violating the town's lockdown policy. Spike: (pointing to Sakura) This girl had a stack of cash. (pointing to Bubbles) This one claims to have found her. Thinking that Sakura here was the thief, Bubbles took matters into her own hands. Velma: So you're holding them for robbery and assault, respectively. Buzz: Technically, yes. Sakura: (hopping up from the bench) I told you... ugh... I'm not the thief! Bubbles: Liar! Stop lying to the sheriff! Buzz: I guess we can lift the lockdown now. Velma: Already done. Spike: What? Velma: When you called and told me you had a suspect in custody, I immediately had the passages in and out of town reopened. Buzz: (scratching his chin) I see. ====== [Time: 10:35 a.m.] Twenty minutes later, the phone in the main office begins to ring. Spike runs out from the prison area and answers the phone. He only stands there for a few seconds before dropping the receiver and immediately heading for the door. Spike: (shouting as he opens the door) Buzz, the missing stuff has been found! Buzz: (shouting back) Hold on! I'm coming with you! ====== [Time: 10:39 a.m.] One-fourth of a mile south of town, at the entrance to a cave built into the cliffs, Botan stands there with a sack filled with the stolen items. Buzz and Spike are fishing through them carefully, calling out items as they pull them out. Buzz: Pom poms... Spike: A disguise kit... Buzz: Roll of film... Spike: Silver medal... Buzz: Pair of sunglasses... Spike: And a red wig. Yep, it's all here. Buzz: Except for the money stolen from the bank. And the missing actress. Spike: (to Botan) That's all that was in there? Botan: You can check the cave if you want. But it's not worth it. You can see the end of the cave from the entrance. Spike: Buzz, you said the actress is still missing. Right? Buzz: Yes. Your point being? Spike: Well, isn't it safe to assume now that she may have been kidnapped by the bank robber? Buzz: You have a point. We need to talk to the mayor and have the town locked down! We also need to find out who has left in the last half hour. Spike: (to Botan) If you don't mind, we'd like you to come with us for some questioning. Botan: Sure. Besides, we won't be getting any taping done with Sally missing. ====== [Time: 11:08 a.m.] More than two miles south of town, a wandering traveler named Jack [Samurai Jack] is making his way through the desert wasteland and towards the nearest city. As he walks, he begins to hear the sound of horseshoes pounding on the sand. He turns around and sees a two-horse stagecoach approaching him. And sitting in the driver's seat are Buzz and Hercule. Hercule: Hey you! Stop, you thief! Jack: I'm a not a thief. Why are you here? Buzz: (taking out his badge) Sheriff Buzz Lightyear of Gullible Gulch. We need you to come back with us. Jack: Is this about the robberies from yesterday? I swear, I am not involved. Buzz: If you are not involved, then you wouldn't mind coming back to town with us for some questioning. Jack: Why? Look, being stuck in your town yesterday put me behind schedule. I'm supposed to be in Tucson by tonight to compete in a fencing competition. Buzz: And I guarantee that I will drive you there myself once we get what we need from you. Look, just come with us. Hercule: Unless you really did do it and you're trying to get away. (to Buzz) In that case, arrest him! Jack: Fine. I will go back to town with you. As long as you promise to get me to Tucson by nightfall. Buzz: I promise. With that, Jack walks to the stagecoach, opens the door, and gets in. Buzz then turns it around and heads back to town. ====== [Time: 11:50 p.m.] Buzz and Velma are now sitting inside the living room of the mayor's house. The robber/kidnapper is still on the loose, much to their chagrin. Buzz: The town's locked down and there's still no sign of the thief. Velma: No one's willing to talk? Not even those two girls you arrested this morning? Buzz: We let them both go, but we told them that if they tried to leave town, they would be arrested on the spot. Velma: You've interrogated the entire populace twice in 36 hours! You're telling me the guy's still loose? Buzz: Yes, ma'am. I'm sorry. Velma: This guy's a lot more slippy than we anticipated. We'll have to call in outside help. Buzz: Mayor Dinkley! Deputy Spiegel and I will get to the bottom of this! Velma: How do I know you're not purposely holding back information from me? Buzz: I would never do such a thing! Velma: To be on the safe side, I think calling outside help would be the best decision. And I have the perfect organization in mind. ====== [Location: Detectives for Hire, Washington, DC, USA] [Time: 2:00 a.m. ET] Sitting behind a chestnut colored desk in his own personal office, 31-year old Christian 'Chris' Tangera is busy... playing his Game Boy Advance. Chris: Come on, jump! (game over music begins to play) Hey! I said jump! Not walk off the cliff! Stupid Yoshi! Suddenly, the brown-haired Asian-American is shaken out of game-playing mode by the ringing of the phone on his desk. Straightening his suit out, he answers the phone. Chris: Detectives for Hire, Washington office. We're the source for all of your mystery solver needs. How may I help you? Velma: (VO) This is Velma Dinkley, mayor of the town of Gullible Gulch. I'm in need of some detectives. Chris: That's what we're here for, Mayor Dinkley. How many? Velma: (VO) Hmmmm... I'll need quite a few. It's a very complicated case. Chris: Very well then. I'll get my best men and women on the case. They'll be there by ASAP. Chris hangs up the phone. He then hops out of his seat and walks over to a nearby file cabinet.
