Adventures Series, Episode 11 (Version 1.1): “The New Leader of Saffron City” Disclaimer: Arius and Pauly do belong to me, but the others do not. Pokémon and all related concepts are property of their respective companies. ************************************************************************** Tuesday, November 10th, Saffron City Arius: Saffron City at last! Misty: Saffron City? This place gives me the creeps. Arius: Why? Narrator: As Misty explains to Arius about her last encounter in Saffron City, let’s review a few things to catch up. The duo has recently come from the island resort of Porta Vista, as Misty doubled her Pokémon total from four to eight, including an unknown Pokémon in an egg that has yet to hatch. Now, with just one week left before the deadline, Misty must now locate Sabrina and win the Marsh Badge. Arius: Oh come on. This Sabrina can’t be that bad! Misty: Oh yeah? Why don’t you tell her yourself? Arius: What are you talking about? Arius turns around and there stands Sabrina. She looks the same as when Misty and the others saw her last time. Only now she’s looking worse for the wear. ************************************************************************ Adventures Series, Episode 11: “Misty’s Travels to the Pokémon League,” Chapter 5: “The New Leader of Saffron City” Story Written by Freedom Fighter ************************************************************************ Misty: Sabrina! What are you doing here? Sabrina: It’s a long story. Allow me to explain back at my place. ====== At Sabrina’s house, which is a standard Japanese one with the sliding doors, the trio are now dressed in kimonos. Misty sips some lemon tea and Arius takes a bite out of a piece of sushi as Sabrina begins telling the terrible truth of recent events. (Begin flashback, from “The Pokémon League Novice Tournament,” Chapter 1) Sabrina: It was a normal day last week. I was relaxing in the gym because I hadn’t had a challenger for the Marsh Badge all day. I was reading this month’s issue of “The Psychic Pokémon Connection,” when this strange man bursts in and throws his Pokéball to the ground to battle, without any warning! It was a Dragonite! Arius: A Dragonite? But aren’t those things pretty rare? Sabrina: Yes, they are. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. It overpowered my Kadabra tremendously. Kadabra didn’t stand a chance. Then, the worst thing possible occurred. He psychically stripped me of my Pokéballs! He then used telekinesis to slam me into the wall, he takes Haunter away from me, and when I tried to retaliate, he overpowered me and sent me and all of my staff out. He took over the gym, and now he’s used some type of sorcery to call all the ghost Pokémon from nearby Lavender Town. (End flashback) Misty: That’s terrible! Sabrina: Every night since the incident, ghost Pokémon have been haunting the city. Tourists have stayed clear of here, while Pokémon trainers have become afraid to try and capture the ghosts. If this keeps up, Saffron City might not last another week. Arius: Is there something we can do? Sabrina: Yes, if Misty is willing to help. Misty: Me? But I can’t go to the gym. I don’t have any psychic or ghost Pokémon. Sabrina: Surely you have something that you can use against this guy. Misty: All I have is Staryu, Starmie, Psyduck, Vaporeon, Scyther, Goldeen, and Poliwhirl. In addtion, I doubt any of them would be strong enough for this type of challenge. Sabrina: How about you, young boy? Arius: For your information, the name is Arius. My Pokémon are Golbat, Beedrill, Butterfree, Venomoth, Snorlax, Porygon, Mr. Mime, Chansey, and Drowzee. Misty: I didn’t know that you trained Pokémon with psychic attacks! Sabrina: That’s great! That’s just what we need right now! Will you help save Saffron City? Arius: Sure, I guess. Sabrina takes Arius’ hand and runs off towards the gym, with Misty following right behind them. Inside the gym, a mysterious stranger awaits the arrival of our heroes. He uses his telepathic powers to see them arrive at the entrance to the gym. Intruder: So, that sissy Sabrina thinks she can get two young kids to stop me? (studies Misty) She’s cute, but she doesn’t stand a chance against me. (begins to study Arius) But this boy, there’s something familiar about him that I can’t figure out. Misty: How do we get inside? Sabrina: I was hoping that Arius here would know what to do. Arius: Yeah, of course I know what to do. (calls out Porygon) Porygon, come out and play! The strangely shaped crystal bird Pokémon comes out of its Pokéball, prepared for battle. Arius: Porygon, knock the door down using your psybeam attack! A ray of light shines from Porygon’s eyes and then a beam destroys the door. Sabrina walks up to the door and examines it. Sabrina: When this is over, you’re paying for the door. Arius: (as Sabrina walks in) Huh? Misty: (following Sabrina in) You should’ve found a way to open the door without damaging it. Arius: Well, one of you could of told me! The trio and Porygon enter the gym, only to find it more dismal than usual. Misty: Wow, this place looks better in the dark. Sabrina: Well Misty, it won’t matter if this guy isn’t stopped. Who knows what he’s capable of. Intruder’s Voice: Hello there! Who dares enter the Saffron gym without my permission? Sabrina: It is I, Sabrina, the true leader of this gym. I order you to get out! Intruder’s Voice: My dear, let me get this straight. I kicked you out so easily, yet you still want a rematch? Sabrina: That’s right! And this time, I will beat you! Intruder’s Voice: Not without your Pokémon you won’t. Sabrina: Who said I wanted a Pokémon battle? Arius: You can’t mean... Misty: Sabrina, this is crazy! You can’t take him on all by yourself! Intruder’s Voice: Yes Sabrina, listen to your friends. You can’t possibly have the power to defeat me in hand-to-hand combat. Sabrina: We shall see. Intruder’s Voice: If that is your wish, then come to battle arena... alone. Sabrina: You’ve got a deal. Sabrina psychically teleports herself to the battle arena. Misty: Sabrina! Wait! Arius: There’s something familiar about this guy’s voice. Misty: Now’s not the time to play detective, Arius. We’ve got to get to the battle arena room and make sure that Sabrina is safe. Misty runs off. After a few more moments in thought, Arius and Porygon follow her. ====== In the battle arena room, Sabrina and the intruder begin to fight using their psychic powers. Intruder: You must understand Sabrina that this time, we’re playing all or nothing. Sabrina: Yes, I understand. The winner will get the gym... Intruder: ...And the loser will die! Agreed! But I hate getting my hands dirty, so I’m offering you one last chance to walk away alive. Sabrina: You wish... you monster! Sabrina begins focusing her energy and fires a pink beam of light at the intruder. The stranger puts up a telekinetic shield to block the attack. Intruder: (sarcastically) Oh, that stung. Don’t tell me that a master psychic Pokémon trainer like you can’t even break a simple shield! Sabrina fires beam after beam at the intruder, but not even one penetrates the shield. Sabrina doubles over in exhaustion. The intruder smiles. Intruder: Are you done? Good. He lifts one finger and uses it to lift Sabrina into the air and slam her down to the floor. He then teleports behind her, lifts her above his head, and throws her down hard. Intruder: Oh, come on, Sabrina. You must have quite a death wish. You haven’t touched me once! Sabrina tries to get up, but the intruder is using telekinesis to hold her down. He then kicks her in the stomach. Sabrina groans in pain. Sabrina: What? You... ran... out of... psychic tricks? Intruder: No, my dear. I just like to have a lot of fun with my victims before they die! The intruder psychically lifts Sabrina into the air so she is floating and staring right at him, but she can’t move any part of her body. Sabrina: Let me go! Intruder: (laughs) Seriously, you think that I’m going to let you go? He walks up to Sabrina, puts his arms around Sabrina’s hips, and begins to embrace her. Just as it seems that he’s about to get more “personal,” he pulls away and then uses a psybeam to knock her into the wall. Intruder: (wipes his lips, then begins to walk away) You know, that was sort of refreshing. Maybe I’ll keep you alive a little longer, Sabrina. He walks to the throne chair and sits down. He suddenly pulls a lunch box out of nowhere and begins to eat and drink. Sabrina continues to pant on the ground, too tired to get up. Meanwhile, Misty, Arius, and Porygon have finally managed to reach the door to the battle arena room. Arius tries to push the door open, but to no avail. Arius: The door is so strong! We’ve got to figure a way to knock it down. Misty: (puts her ear against the door) Oh no! Arius: What’s wrong? Misty: I don’t hear anything in there! Arius: That’s definitely a bad sign. This calls for drastic measures. Arius pulls out another Pokéball and throws it at the door. Arius: Snorlax, come out and play! Snorlax comes out, asleep as usual. Misty: (angry) What good will a Snorlax do? It’s asleep! Arius: If you’d calm down I’d show you. Arius pulls out a Poké-flute and begins to play a song on it. After playing for several minutes, Snorlax’s ears begin to move. Then his ears, mouth, and eventually, the whole body follow suit. Snorlax awakens and then faces its master. Arius: Hey, Snorlax, it’s been a while. Listen, I’ll give you a massive plate of vines to eat if you bust down the door. Okay? Snorlax: Snore. Lax. Snorlax begins pushing against the door, and after a few pushes knocks the door down. Arius: Good work, Snorlax. I’ll feed you after we get done with this battle. Return! Snorlax returns to its Pokéball. Misty steps in ahead of Arius and Porygon. She gasps in horror of the destruction of the arena. She sees Sabrina on the floor, barely conscious. She then spots the intruder in Sabrina’s chair, still chowing down on his lunch. Arius and Porygon finally reach Misty and stare in the same horrible shock as she did just moments ago. The intruder finally realizes that they’re in the room. Intruder: So, you two bungling fools managed to get here at last. Misty: What have you done to Sabrina? Intruder: Nothing... just yet. Arius: All right, whoever you are. Tell me who you really are. Intruder: If you wish. But first, I must take care of some business. He starts by turning his eyes towards Sabrina’s limp body. Suddenly, Sabrina is surrounded by a pink aura. Misty and Arius gasp in fear. Arius: Hey! Intruder: I’ll be with you in just a second. He then pulls out another one of his weird looking Pokéballs and aims it at Porygon, capturing it! Arius: Give Porygon back! Misty: You can’t just go around stealing people’s Pokémon. Intruder: No one asked you for your opinion, girl! He fires a red beam at Misty, which teleports her out of the room. Intruder: There. Now, you wanted to know who I am, right? Arius nods in agreement, although upset of what had just transpired. He didn’t want the intruder to know what he was capable of... just yet. Intruder: Well, if you really must know... I am your long lost older brother! Arius: Pauly? You’re the one wreaking havoc on Saffron City? Pauly: Yes, dear brother! At the ripe age of twenty-seven, I have the power to take over the world! Arius: I won’t let you Pauly! Pauly: I seriously doubt that, Arius. You’ve only known your powers for about two years, not even long enough to challenge that weakling Sabrina! But I, I have been honing my skills for eight years, ever since I left Cobalt Town! You don’t stand a chance! Arius: You realize that I’m going to have to battle you. Pauly: Yes, I knew it was going to come down to this. Two on two fine? Arius: (puzzled) Two on two? You mean Pokémon battle? Pauly: Of course I mean Pokémon battle! I’ve got to give you some type of a chance to beat me. Now, let the battle begin! ************************************************************************ Arius: Mr. Mime, come out and play! Mr. Mime: Mr. Mime! Pauly: Jynx, go! Jynx: Jynx! Arius: Mr. Mime, confusion attack! Pauly: Jynx, mega punch! Mr. Mime’s confusion attack renders Jynx useless. Pauly: Jynx, lovely kiss! Jynx is still confused, and doesn’t perform the attack. Arius: All right, Mr. Mime, double slap! Mr. Mime: Mime, mime mime! Mr. Mime! The attack knocks Jynx out of the match. Pauly: Jynx, return! Arius: So, what happened to your “all-powerful” experience, brother? Pauly: You won’t be laughing once I pull out my best Pokémon. Arius: And that is? Pauly: (throws a Pokéball) Exeggcute, go! Exeggcute: Exeggcute! Pauly: Exeggcute, charge up for the solar beam attack! Arius: Mr. Mime, barrier! Mr. Mime uses barrier to increase his defense as Exeggcute prepares to fire the solar beam. Pauly: Exeggcute, solar beam! The solar beam knocks Mr. Mime out. Arius: Oh yeah? Two can play at this game! Drowzee, come out and play! Drowzee: Drowzee. Arius: Let’s see if Exeggcute can stand up to Drowzee! ====== Meanwhile, at the city border, Misty reappears. Misty: (surprised) What? What am I doing at the entrance to the city? I’ve got to get back and help Sabrina and Arius! She sprints off for the gym. Back at the gym, the two Pokémon begin to fight. Pauly: Exeggcute, stun spore! Arius: Drowzee, use psychic! The psychic attack pushes the stun spore back at Exeggcute, who manages to shake it off. Pauly: All right, Exeggcute, time to show them your ultimate attack! Arius: Drowzee, get ready to unleash your secret weapon! Pauly and Arius: (simultaneously) Time freeze! Drowzee and Exeggcute fire their time freeze attacks, and they synchronize. This causes a time freeze coat that covers the whole gym, freezing everyone inside, including the trainers themselves. A lot of people watch outside as the coat covers the gym outside. Misty tries to push her way through the crowd to see what happened. Misty: (pushing someone aside) Excuse me. (looks at the gym) What is that thing? A man in a police uniform comes up to Misty and explains the situation. His badge has the name Days on it. Officer Days: I’m not sure what it is exactly, but anything that steps into the vicinity stops dead in its tracks. Watch. He throws a small rock towards the gym, and it suddenly stops in midair, to the surprise of Misty and most of the overlooking crowd. Misty: How is that possible? Officer Days: I don’t know, but until it comes down, we won’t be able to get in there. Hours pass by quickly, as the crowd starts to thin out, confident that the barrier won’t be coming down anytime soon. A small group of people decided to camp out, including Misty as well as reporters, police officers, and ambulance crews, just in case they were needed. Misty: (with a worried look as she opens her sleeping bag) I wonder how Ash is doing in the tournament. She wanders over to a group of people who are watching a sports reporter give the results of the day’s matches. Reporter: Now moving on to the eighth match of the day. Two trainers who have suffered misfortune more than once in the preliminaries, but managed to get into the first round thanks to some spectacular saves. Unfortunately, one of them suffers a third and final misfortune that resulted in the end of the journey, at least for another six months. Back at Indigo Stadium, Ashley Drizzle of Mizano Town and Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town faced off in the soggiest match of the day. Flash to scenes from the battle (from “The Pokémon League Novice Tournament,” Chapter 3). Report: Ashley’s Jigglypuff takes the early advantage and knocks out Ash’s Kingler, but Ash responds with Muk to even it up. Muk then defeats Ashley’s Chansey, but she then sends out Arbok. Ash obviously knew that was a mistake on her part, and he recalled Muk and sent his faithful Pikachu to deliver the final blow. Ash moves on to the second round to face Ricky Langley, one of the toughest competitors here. Misty: Good. Ash won. Maybe after this clears up, I can catch a plane up to the Indigo Plateau to watch his final match. She returns to her sleeping bag to get a little rest. It was going to be a hard fight if she managed to get inside the gym the following morning. The following morning, November 11th. Misty, Officer Days, and Officer Jenny (she finally arrived after being on duty all day) have been allowed to enter the gym once the strange “time freezing” shield goes down. Speaking of which... Days: The shield is coming down! Jenny: Let’s go! Misty: Hang on Arius and Sabrina! We’re coming to save you guys! The three enter the gym and head towards the battle arena room. Once inside the room, they see everyone still waking up from the effects. Pauly: Well, look who’s back. It’s the little squirt with two police officers! Misty: Who are you calling a squirt? Jenny: Let me handle this, Misty. My name is Officer Jenny, the head of the Saffron City Police Department, and I’m ordering you to surrender. Pauly: Oh, sure. A blue-haired woman in a skirt that’s smaller than her brain is going to order me to surrender? Jenny: (gets angry) That’s it! I’m going to tear you apart! Days: (holding her back) Calm down, Jenny! That guy’s crazy! Don’t listen to anything he says. Pauly: (to Days) You’re the sorriest excuse for a police officer I’ve ever seen! Days: (enraged) That‘s it! Now you’re going to get it! He pulls out his gun a fires a shot before Misty or Officer Jenny can stop him. But just as quickly as the shot had been fired, Sabrina, who had slightly recovered from the last battle, suddenly begins to favor her right shoulder. Misty: Sabrina! Misty tries to help Sabrina, but Pauly telekinetically sends her flying towards the wall. Arius, who has just awaken, takes this slight moment of freedom to knock his brother down to the floor. Pauly: How dare you! Arius: You shouldn’t have taken your eyes off me, brother. Pauly: That’s it! You and me, one on one, all or nothing! Arius: Agreed. The two began to stare down at each other. Suddenly, two psybeams are emitted from their heads, and they begin to fight. The match is about even, as one can’t get an advantage over the other. Pauly: You will never defeat me, brother. Arius: I beg to differ, brother. Meanwhile, Jenny and Days run over to revive Misty. Jenny: Misty, are you all right? Misty: (waking up) I’m okay. Days: That was a hard hit you took there, kiddo. Misty: I’ll be fine. Wait, what about Sabrina? She gets up and runs over to Sabrina. Misty: Sabrina, are you okay? Sabrina: No, I’m in terrible pain. Misty could see blood all over Sabrina’s left hand, which was covering the bullet wound. Days and Jenny join them shortly after. Days: (sweatdrops) Sorry about that. I could have sworn I aimed for that guy. Sabrina: (weakly) Of course you were aiming for him. He telekinetically redirected the bullet in mid-air and sent it flying towards me. Misty: Lucky for you, Sabrina, his aim was slightly off. Jenny: (pulls out a handkerchief from her blouse) Let’s tie that wound up. Sabrina: (stands up) Don’t worry about it. She begins to form a ball of energy to use against Pauly. Misty tries to stop her, but the light is so bright that she can’t get within twenty feet of the psychic master. Misty joins Jenny and Days, who are watching the struggling battle between the battling brothers. Arius: (becoming stronger) I’m going to finish you no matter what, Pauly! Pauly: (equally increasing power) No, Arius, it is I that will finish you! Sabrina: (deep in thought) This is my chance to put this guy down! (to Pauly) Pauly, or whatever your name is, you may invade my gym, steal all my Pokémon, and hurt my friends. But don’t you ever, ever try and touch me! Misty: (to Jenny and Days) Stay back! She’s never been this angry before! Sabrina fires the energy ball at Pauly, hitting him in the back. This gives Arius the advantage he needs to apply full power to his attack. Arius’s psybeam and Sabrina’s energy ball converge at the exact point that Pauly is standing at. When the smoke clears, Pauly’s body is unconscious on the floor. Sabrina: The nightmare is finally over. She sighs in relief. Suddenly, all the Pokémon that Pauly had captured were released, including numerous ghost Pokémon and all of Sabrina’s Pokémon. Kadabra and Haunter reappear by Sabrina’s side. Sabrina: Kadabra! Haunter! I’m glad you’re both all right! Arius: My brother... I really didn’t want it to end this way. Misty: (walks over and puts her hand on his shoulder) You know there was no other way. Jenny: (checking Pauly’s pulse) He’s alive, but barely. We’d better get the paramedics in here! Days: Right away Jenny! Days leaves and then returns a few minutes later. They place Pauly in a strange type of restraining device before placing him on the gurney and pushing it out of the room. Arius then walks over to Sabrina, and ties Jenny’s handkerchief around Sabrina’s injured shoulder. Sabrina: (smiling) Thanks for your help. Arius: (smiling back) I couldn’t have done it without you, Sabrina. Sabrina gets up, stares at Arius, then looks at Misty, who’s just standing there watching them. Sabrina: Ah, Misty, I guess I owe you some thanks as well. Misty: Oh, you don’t have to thank me, Sabrina. I just help whenever I can. Sabrina: And for that I’m going to give you the chance to earn a Marsh Badge. Misty: A Marsh Badge? No, I can’t fight you now, Sabrina. You’re still weak from the battle. It would be unfair for me. Arius: Yes, Sabrina, you need some rest. Sabrina: Trust me, Misty. All though I don’t look one hundred percent physically, I am one hundred percent ready mentally. Misty: Alright, if you say so. Misty and Sabrina take positions at opposite ends of the arena, although it doesn’t look like the place is in any condition for another battle. Arius stood near Sabrina to make sure the wound doesn’t get any worse. Sabrina: One on one, Misty. Those are the rules. Misty: Agreed. For the battle, I’ll choose Vaporeon! Sabrina: And I’ll choose Haunter. Misty: Vaporeon, water gun! Sabrina: (telepathically) Haunter, confusion. Haunter’s confusion attack confuses Vaporeon, so that the water gun fires all over the place. Sabrina: (in thought) Haunter, use night shade. Misty: Vaporeon, haze! Vaporeon’s haze attack holds Haunter off only for a second, as the ghost breaks through and flies towards Vaporeon. Misty: Now Vaporeon, aurora beam! The aurora beam freezes Haunter in place. Sabrina: (yes, still in thought) Haunter, break out and use your lick attack! Misty: Vaporeon, water gun! Haunter breaks out, but it’s not fast enough, as Vaporeon’s water gun puts it down and nearly out. Misty: Now Vaporeon, water gun it one more time! The second water gun attack knocks Haunter out of the match. Misty has won the Marsh Badge! Outside the gym, Sabrina’s fellow employees return to work as usual, while Misty, Sabrina, and Arius begin to discuss future plans. Sabrina: (handing Misty the badge) Misty, I award you with the Marsh Badge for defeating me in battle. Congratulations! Misty: Thanks! I’ve finally got the four badges I need to renew my trainer’s license! Suddenly, the blue light on Misty’s Pokédex begins to flash. She takes it out and opens it. On the other end of the line is Erika, the gym leader of Celadon City. Erika: Hello? Misty, are you there? Misty: Erika? Is that you? Erika: Misty, I’m glad I caught you. Where are you? Misty: In Saffron City. I just won the Marsh Badge. Erika: Congratulations, Misty! Unfortunately, this call isn’t one of pleasure. It’s more of a business call. Misty: Really? Sabrina: Erika, is that you? Hi, Sabrina here! Erika: Sabrina! Man, what happened to you? You look like a wreck. Sabrina: Nice of you to notice. It’s a long story. Erika: Misty, this is kind of a private message, so you and I need to be alone. Misty: (to Sabrina and Arius) Will you two excuse me for a second? Arius: Sure, Misty. Go ahead. Misty walks to a secluded area before glancing back at Erika’s picture in the Pokédex. Erika: Okay Misty, I’ve just found out something startling! Misty: What is it? Erika: The Pokémon League has discovered that a team of con artists are forcing young trainers to leave home and collect gym badges to keep their license. Misty: That’s exactly what I’m doing! Erika: I know. That is weird. The League says that these con artists are just using the ploys to steal trainers’ Pokémon. Misty: Stealing Pokémon? Only Team Rocket would do something so low. Erika: Right. And I found something else of interest. But I don’t want to talk about it here. You don’t know who might be prying around. Misty: So what should I do? Erika: Come to my perfume shop in Celadon City. I’ll tell you what I know there. Until then, act as if your still going on your journey. Misty: But what will I tell Arius? Erika: Arius? Misty: The guy that was with Sabrina. Erika: Oh, him. Just tell him you just want to see the latest samples in my perfume line. Misty: Actually Erika, I do want to see your latest samples of perfume. Erika: That’s good. It’ll make you more believable. See you in a few weeks, Misty! Erika hangs up. Misty walks back to Sabrina and Arius. Misty: Well Arius, are you coming? I’m heading to Celadon City to see Erika’s new perfume line. Arius: No thanks, Misty. I think I’m going to stay here and help Sabrina get things back to normal. Sabrina: Arius, go on with Misty. I can handle things by myself. Arius: Sabrina, first of all, we need to get that wound of yours treated. Second, I need to work on my psychic skills and you’re the perfect trainer to help me. Third, you need someone to run the gym while you recover. Fourth, I have to stay here and make sure my brother doesn’t get loose. Fifth, I... Sabrina and Misty: (simultaneously) We get the idea, Arius! Arius laughed at the thought. Misty waves goodbye to Sabrina and Arius, as she heads off for Celadon City. She then thinks about something... Misty: Hey! This would be a good time to call Ash and see how he’s doing. In seconds, Misty’s Pokédex was dialing the access code to Ash’s Pokédex. Ash got a real surprise when he picked up. Misty: Ash! Ash: Misty? Since when did you get a Poké-Com device? Misty: Long story. How are you doing? Pikachu: (coming into the screen) Pika! Misty: Pikachu! Nice to see you, too! Ash: Me and Pikachu are about to enter the stadium for our second round match... Narrator: And so, as Ash and Misty catch up on the two and a half months that they’ve been apart, we end this tale. Things are finally back to normal in Saffron City... or are they? Scene change to Saffron General Hospital, the Psychiatric Ward to be exact. Inside one of the padded rooms, Pauly McFly sits peacefully in the dark, in the same restraining device from earlier.
